Hey have you heard all those sayings about inspiration exists but it’s just got to find you working?

Well, here’s how my inspiration shows up (and most of the time it finds me laying down on the sofa) no that’s not true really - most of the time it shows up when I’m busy doing something else, and I have to promise that I will make space for it very soon.

However, it is true to say that if my body isn’t in a relaxed state then my mind won't be and it will be more difficult to be tuned to the inspiration. So for me this morning somatic yoga was a good move- literally 😂

So here’s a little film of me sitting in an empty space with inspiration and about to start on a new series of paintings.

I’ll be posting these in my stories to keep them separate from info about the show that I’m doing with my daughter Chloe at the moment, that’s on for the next two weeks in the Guildhall Gallery, Cardigan. I’ll be posting about that on my regular feed so you say anything that you fancy you know what to do!

Setting up @elliott_schmid_art and mine’s show at the Guildhall gallery tomorrow and this large beaut is supposed to be centre stage. The tide has been in and out, out and in. There’s been rough seas and dolphins … now all is calm.

I’ll be taking paints along so maybe it will be quite different… call in and see. What do you think? Is it finished?

From the Edge of the Earth – Inspiration from Brittany 🌊

Spending time sketching in Finistère, Brittany again — a place of wild coastlines, ancient stones, and deep resilience. From the scars of history and ecological tragedy, beauty has bloomed here in the most unexpected, tranquil ways.

I’m bringing these impressions back to the studio with me, where they'll inspire a new series of paintings.

Under the same moon

Soul soothing, sunny, satisfying. Yet - a place of war and disaster. Occupied during WW2 and in 1978 ecologically devastated by the Amoco Cadiz oil spill. And now - heaven.
Whilst painting here the phrase comes to mind ‘a rising tide floats all boats’. So have faith my friends, find what soothes your soul and look for the light.

Thought for today…

When the energy is there for something really good, but the habit is to block and doubt it. The trick for me is to take a walk gently think about the resistance, and think about the excitement and the energy of the new project, and focus gently on giving prevalence to the excitement of the new project and not the resistance from old habits.

There's something about standing in the path, not just observing it, that changes the way I see it. This sketch came from that moment. A crossroads. Trusting intuition, letting go of trying to "get it right."

I’m back in the studio now, but the fields are still with me. The wind, the birdsong, the old tracks underfoot — they’re in my heart now.

This new series is growing from that place. Wild. Rooted. Quietly alive.

Yesterday’s work.

There is a very special piece of land for me that’s located in a triangle in the Yorkshire Wolds of about 5 miles x 4 miles x 3 miles.
Several times a year I come here to find the perfect view. Spring is great when you have the rape fields and the hedgerows all in flower. Summer sees the fields ripe with wheat and the autumn colours are spectacular.

It’s a very little known part of the world, and you can drive or walk for an afternoon and hardly see anyone especially on a Wednesday!

So here’s what I did yesterday - filled the inspirational well up with sketches absorbed the colours, sounds, feelings of the place. Today will be more of a studio day when I’ll work these into some paintings. But before I could do that, I had to spend a day absorbing, being porous.
