Pasg Hapus, Happy Easter

This painting - 60 x 60cm is my Easter painting of St David's Cathederal with the spring blossoms of the ancient cherry tree in the grounds. This is my favourite view of the cathederal - the approach from the ancient cobbled path of Merrivale, towards the main door.
I always think the seagulls that are often seen there (it's only a mile or two from the sea) look like angels flying overhead.

This painting is in my solo show at Oriel Cardi Bach, Aberteifi, until 24th April, along with 19 other new spring-themed, colour filled joyful images.

Each spring, without fail, this lovely tree that I planted 15 years ago, blossoms.

Soft pink petals appear almost overnight, catching the light in a way that feels both familiar and quietly miraculous. No matter what the winter has been, no matter how long or grey, Jupiter comes back into bloom.
There’s something deeply reassuring in that rhythm.

This painting began there — with the simple noticing of blossom against the sky, and the sense of life returning, gently but surely. And then, as I painted, another layer revealed itself.

Beneath the tree, the daisies are pushing through the grass. And resting there too are Minnie and Bosun — my two old Jack Russells, still part of this place, still present in their own way.
It didn’t feel like something I chose to include. More that they were already there.

There’s a quiet comfort in that feeling… that nothing we love is ever truly lost. It changes, softens, becomes part of the landscape of who we are. Like roots beneath the surface, unseen but holding everything in place.

A gentle reminder that life continues to unfold, and that love stays with us in ways we don’t always expect.

'Pushing up Daisies' is part of my current exhibition at Oriel Cardi Bach in Cardigan, West Wales, running until 24th April.

There’s something timeless about simple moments by the water…

The sound of laughter carried on the breeze.

This scene in Aberporth brought back memories of long, golden days — when time stretched out, and the smallest things felt like everything.
A kind of joy we don’t outgrow.

when colour returns, quietly at first, and then all at once.

This painting is that moment.
Fields bursting into life, light shifting through the branches, and the world reflected back in still water — a reminder that what we feel inside is often mirrored around us.

It’s a piece about renewal, about joy, and about trusting that even after the longest seasons, something beautiful is always on its way back.

Not long now until these 17 new paintings are on the wall at Oriel Cardi Bach, Aberteifi.

This is the first collection of new paintings from me for a few years and I am excited to see them curated and on the walls at Jess’s gallery.

The show’s on for a month and previews and starts with a Preview on the 28th of March - this Saturday from 5 till 630.

I’m really looking forward to seeing these paintings on the wall, seeing how they work together and how they change the space that they are hanging in.

Preparing for a solo show is exhausting.
Mentally.
Physically.
Emotionally.

And I blooming love it.

Nothing else gets done - no socialising, no sketching, and certainly no housework. Focus is completely on the work. And that’s why it’s exciting and exhausting. The work has to be done. Deadlines met.

Nearly done. The last of the framing. Final tweaks to two that aren’t quite resolved. Delivering the paintings. Then that’s 6 months worth of work - emptied.

I think these 15 paintings are my best work to-date … and that’s 30 years and counting. But tbh I have been looking at them for so long it’s hard to tell.

I’m looking forward to seeing how they work in the gallery when Jess, the owner and curator, has hung them. Seeing how they relate to each other. Seeing how they transform the space.

As a favourite artist of mine @brianrutenberg says “to be an artist you need to be 10 feet tall and bullet proof” after all these years I am getting there.

Ah the joys!

absolutely love these final few days before show when the paintings suddenly transform (yes it surprises me too! ) a sudden splash of colour a new character something painted over always happens at the last minute and he’s always very exciting.

Then they’re put into frames and all packed up and I can start relaxing a bit … but no… then I get very excited about sharing them!
