This is a diagram of my process of teaching art over the last 15 years.

The top bit of the iceberg is the techniques and materials, the practical skills. Easily learnable in a few days.

The bottom part with the Q - the biggest part by far, the the part we need to make us creative, inspired, effective and resourced as artists.

What is it ? it and why the Q?

Quite simply it’s the skills that we learn around self awareness that lead to creative alignment with our true selves.
Without this it really is just paint and paper.

The Q is because this huge resource is accessed by learning how to ask the right questions of ourselves that open doors to understanding:
- How to create and keep confidence in our work.
- How to work creatively with our self criticism and self belief.
- How to find and follow aligned inspiration.

And much, much more. And the beautiful part? As we paint, we create and the right questions naturally arise.
It’s never just paint and paper.

Creativity is necessary because it’s a release valve for the soul. It allows us to process the world, make sense of emotions, and connect with something bigger than our day-to-day concerns.

Even if it doesn’t produce anything "useful" in a conventional sense, it nurtures inner balance, which then ripples outward into everything else — relationships, decisions, energy, even business.

It’s like dreaming while awake — seemingly aimless but essential for integration and evolution. Without creativity, we risk becoming too utilitarian, too boxed in by logic or routine.

Creativity isn’t just play. It’s alignment. A way of coming back to our own rhythm and truth.

A lovely day in West Wales and I'm going to Llangrannog to visit a new shop there and to walk Albie, have some lunch by the sea and of course do some sketching.
