The Archive

It is always hard for an artist to look back on earlier work.. We are by nature the ones who continually evolve, looking for the next exciting colour combination, the next juxtaposition of line... ways to improve on our previous work. We are our harshest critics.

The truth, as I'm fond of telling students, is that there is no arrival, no perfection, no end point, by nature we strive for the something always slightly out of sight, we crave it, the excitement of the next brush mark... yet we know, there is no perfection, only our imperfect offering, and the joy we feel in the creating of it and the excitement striving for, and almost, almost acheiving what will never be.
The act of painting teaches us many things... and in looking back over these 40-plus years, the one lesson I am left with is this: it's never perfect and it's never finished... the importance lies in the enjoyment of the ride.
